COMMUNITY SERVICE (Director: Tom Wollam)…
Community Service is Rotary’s third avenue of service. Community Service focuses on the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community by encouraging the application of the ideal of Rotary service. In carrying out this application of the ideal of service, a variety of activities developed by Rotary clubs have afforded significant opportunities for service by their members. For the guidance of Rotarians and to formulate a policy for Rotary toward community service activities, the following principles are recognized:
Community Service is an opportunity for every Rotarian to exemplify Rotary’s primary motto of “Service Above Self.” It is the commitment and social responsibility of every Rotarian and Rotary club to improve the quality of life for those who live in the community and to serve the public interest.
A sampling of the projects and activities that the Anaheim Hills Rotary Club has undertaken in just the past few years include the following: clothing drives; diaper drives; toy drives; blood drives; adopt a social worker; new box springs & mattresses to youth in need; support for Canyon Acres Family Services; support for the Eli Home; Shopping Sprees for children in need; Cancer Walk-athons; concerts in the park for the Canyon Hills commnunity; feeding the hungry/Thanksgiving dinner; support for the Deacon Jones Foundation; serving thousands of pancakes at AH’s Fourth of July celebrations & contributing proceeds to the Canyon Hills Community Council; hands-on support for Heritage Day with the Canyon Hills Women’s Club; construction of walls of children’s hand painted tiles at a number of elementary schools in the community; purchasing and distributing thousands of books to local schools AND to schools in the Philippines; purchasing the crown and sash for Miss Anaheim Hills and her Court; running a successful business networking meeting for the community; raising in excess of $9,000.00 for an AIDS project for a Rotary Club in Edenvale, South Africa; with Corazon – building a House-In-A-Day for a poor family in Mexico; holding several successful fund raisers (Golf Tournaments, Poker Tournaments, Music Festivals, and more); Canyon Pride Day at Canyon High School; on-going support for The Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus (on target to literally wipe out Polio from the Face of the Earth!); erecting a beautiful “Centennial Year Celebration” clock at the Anaheim Convention Center; enjoying the company of numerous Rotarians and members of our community at hockey games, baseball games, dinner theater, karaoke, picnics, concerts, Mystery Nights, and on and on and on….
